The Modern Languages Department is a well-organised and highly successful department which encourages high standards of achievement and performance from all students form Years 7 to 13. We are able to offer French, German, Spanish and Latin and pride ourselves on our excellent exam results at both GCSE and A'Level.

Languages at Ellen Wilkinson are taught using a wide range of methods; both tried and tested and new and exciting. We place a real emphasis on communication in lessons and students will be encouraged to participate orally whilst developing their reading, writing and listening skills. During the first year, students will be introduced to a wide range of vocabulary taught through different topic areas with a strong emphasis being placed on grammar. This will then be developed in subsequent years.

All students in Year 7 study French before being given the opportunity to take up another language (alongside French) in Year 8. Pupils must then continue to study at least one language to GCSE level. We have an excellent take-up at A'Level and many of our students choose to study a language at university.

We are very fortunate to be able to offer a varied extra-curricular programme, from French film club to residential visits to Spain. These provide students with an excellent opportunity to use the language they have been learning as well as gaining an insight into the culture of that country. Have a look at our photos…
