Windrush at 75 Ealing Competition

June 2023 marked the 75th anniversary of the first arrival of HMT Windrush. In recognition of this, Ealing Council launched a borough wide competition for students to partake in. Students had to create a piece of art or write a poem celebrating the achievements and contributions of the Windrush generation, and their descendants.

June 2023, Douaa Al-Shamari was nominated as the KS3 winner in Ealing for her poem, Resilience In The face of Adversity.

Consequently, Douaa was invited to an official celebration ceremony where all Ealing winners were asked to present and read their winning entries in front of established Poets, laureates, Ealing Councillors and the Local Mayor.

Douaa was presented with her KS3 Winners Award, and her winning entry also won the school £200!

Her poem was published in the official Winners Celebration booklet for 2023. This is a prime example of our students taking part in competitions, showcasing their fantastic talents!

Well done Douaa on challenging yourself and representing the school so excellently! We are very proud of you!

EWS Celebrates Windrush Day 2023

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Windrush, Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls hosted its own Windrush Day on 22nd June 2023. In recognition of this, the canteen was decorated in flags of the Caribbean. Our fantastic canteen staff prepared a variety of Caribbean lunch options, ranging from jerk chicken to pineapple cake! In addition to our celebration of this Diamond Jubilee, our students dined whilst swaying to rhythms of the Caribbean!
