Welcome to EWS
EWS is a wonderfully diverse school, a microcosm of multi-cultural London with students and staff from a range of different backgrounds, faiths and cultures. We have gained a variety of awards recognising our strengths in areas from our success in adding value (Specialist Schools Award) to Investor in People (since 1999). We are particularly proud of the SSAT Gold Award for Cultural Diversity, the assessors noting that “the ethos of the school is an outstanding feature” and that there is “a highly cohesive and mutually supportive community where everyone feels valued and enjoys learning”. Our recent Ofsted report also recognised the girls’ outstanding personal development and well-being.
The school became a specialist college for Science and Mathematics in 2002, re-designated in 2006 and 2009 and, following our recognition as a High Performing Specialist School, was awarded Training School status in 2007. Exciting developments and opportunities that have been introduced as a result form part of a range of strategies that continue to enable our girls to raise their levels of achievement even higher, and provide enrichment and challenge for our students. We are committed to creating opportunities for success.
Our students benefit from a team of highly qualified and hardworking staff who enjoy working with young people. The excellent relationships between pupils and staff provide an ethos that effectively supports and encourages learning.
Key features of our school include:
• An ethos that supports our commitment to providing excellent learning experiences
• Outstanding pastoral care of students
• A varied and flexible curriculum
• Innovative approaches to teaching and learning
• An extensive range of extra curricular and enrichment activities
• Collaborative working through a range of partnerships
With a Sixth Form of around 350 students, the school attracts applications from girls studying at a variety of schools each year; the majority of our Year 11 students also chose to continue their studies here. Most of our Year 13 girls go on to higher education, many gaining places at top universities, including Imperial, Kings and Cambridge, studying in highly competitive areas such as Medicine, the Natural Sciences, Law and English.
We believe that excellence will be achieved by constantly challenging students, raising aspirations, and by insisting that good behaviour enables great learning. Traditional values of tolerance, courtesy and respect are important at the Ellen Wilkinson School. We also believe that education is more than just academic success. This involves developing the whole person through confidence, responsibility and leadership; creating opportunities for students to develop their talent and creativity; capitalising on diversity, not uniformity; creating an environment of vibrancy and enthusiasm for learning. The Ellen Wilkinson School is a place where girls can develop self belief, determination, resilience and ambition, and not be afraid to chase their dreams. Our students will be optimistic, articulate, compassionate young women ready to take their place in society.
